Slow Wi-Fi? Stop Calling Support. Try These Fixes First.
Most slow Wi-Fi comes down to router placement, interference, or a device that needs a restart. Here's how to spot the cause and fix it yourself in a few minutes.
Your show freezes. Your video call turns into a slideshow. The first thought is usually "something's wrong with my internet." Sometimes that's true. But most of the time, the fiber line coming into your home is working just fine and the slowdown is happening somewhere between your router and your device.
The good news? That part is usually something you can fix on your own. Watch our quick video below, then use the checklist to work through it step by step.
Slow Wi-Fi or Slow Internet? Know the Difference
Your internet is the fiber connection Wire 3 brings to your home. Your Wi-Fi is the wireless signal your router sends around the house. Fiber is fast and steady, but Wi-Fi still travels through the air, so walls, distance, and other electronics can slow it down. When only some rooms or some devices feel slow, Wi-Fi is almost always the reason.
6 Quick Fixes for Slow Wi-Fi
1. Restart your router and your device
It's the oldest trick in the book because it works. Unplug your eero or router, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Give it a couple of minutes to come back online. While you wait, restart the phone, laptop, or TV that's acting up too.
Tip: Devices that run for weeks without a restart can get sluggish on their own. A quick reboot clears that up.
2. Check where your router lives
Placement matters more than most people think. Your router works best out in the open, up off the floor, and as close to the center of your home as possible. Tucked in a cabinet, behind the TV, or in a far corner closet, the signal has a lot more to push through.
Tip: Try moving it to a shelf or table in a central room and test again. Small moves can make a big difference.
3. Clear out interference
Microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, and wireless speakers can all compete with your Wi-Fi signal. Thick walls, large mirrors, and fish tanks can block it too. Keep your router a few feet away from other electronics and big metal or glass surfaces.
Tip: If your Wi-Fi only slows down while dinner is in the microwave, you've found your culprit.
4. See what's sharing your connection
Game downloads, cloud backups, system updates, and 4K streams on other devices can all pull bandwidth in the background. Open the eero app to see what's connected and which devices are using the most.
Tip: Pause big downloads or schedule updates overnight so they don't compete with your daytime streaming and calls.
5. Run a speed test near the router
This is how you tell slow Wi-Fi from a service issue. Stand right next to your router (or plug a laptop in with an Ethernet cable) and run a speed test. Then run it again in the room where things feel slow.
Tip: Fast near the router but slow across the house? That's a coverage issue, not your fiber. Slow everywhere, even when plugged in? That's when we want to hear from you.
6. Reconnect the device that's struggling
If one device is slow while everything else is fine, the problem is likely the device. Forget the network in its Wi-Fi settings and join again, check for software updates, and make sure it isn't stuck on a weak signal from another room.
Tip: Older phones, laptops, and smart TVs may not support the newest Wi-Fi standards, so they won't hit the same speeds as newer devices.
Slow Wi-Fi in Some Rooms? You May Need More Coverage
If your speed test shows great results near the router but certain rooms always lag, your home may simply need more Wi-Fi coverage. Larger homes, multiple floors, and detached spaces like garages or home offices are common trouble spots. Every Wire 3 plan includes an eero Wi-Fi device, and our Whole-Home Wi-Fi option adds coverage for those hard to reach spaces.

Slow Wi-Fi FAQs
Why is my Wi-Fi slow if I have fiber internet?
Fiber delivers fast, reliable speeds to your home, but Wi-Fi still travels through the air. Router placement, interference from other electronics, distance, and older devices can all slow down the wireless signal even when your fiber connection is working perfectly.
How do I know if it's my Wi-Fi or my internet service?
Run a speed test right next to your router or with a device plugged in by Ethernet. If speeds are strong there but slow in other rooms, it's a Wi-Fi coverage issue. If speeds are slow even when plugged in, contact us through your Customer Hub Account.
How often should I restart my router?
There's no strict schedule, but a restart is a good first step any time you notice slow Wi-Fi. Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and give it a couple of minutes to reconnect.
Where is the best place to put my router?
Somewhere central, open, and elevated, like a shelf in a main living area. Avoid cabinets, closets, corners, and spots right next to microwaves, mirrors, or other electronics.
Do I need a mesh Wi-Fi system?
If you have a larger home, multiple floors, or rooms that always have a weak signal, extra coverage can help. Wire 3 offers Whole-Home Wi-Fi to extend a strong signal throughout your space.
